The first individuals to live in this region were Native Americans. These occupants resided here 1000s of years before any visitors from Spain or France showed up. Early French or Spanish fur traders were most likely the very first Europeans in the region.The first documented explorers to record their travels through this region were the Americans Meriwether Lewis and William Clark throughout the summer of 1804. Sergeant Charles Floyd, a representative of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, passed away here on August 20, 1804, the only death throughout the two and a half-year expedition.

In 1891, the Sioux City Elevated Railway was opened up and grew to become the third steam powered elevated rapid transit system on the planet, and later the first electric-powered elevated railway in the world following a conversion in 1892. However, the system fell into bankruptcy and shut down inside of a decade.

The city received the nickname “Little Chicago” throughout the Prohibition era because of its reputation for being a purveyor of alcohol.

Sioux City is the main city of the four-county Sioux City, IA-NE-SD Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), having a population of 143,005 in 2000 and a small increase to an estimated 144,360 in 2009. The Sioux City-Vermillion, IA-NE-SD Combined Statistical Area experienced a population of 156,503 as of 2000 and has expanded to an estimated population of 157,850 as of 2009.

Sioux City is at the navigational head of the Missouri River, about 95 miles to the north of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. Sioux City and the surrounding parts of northwestern Iowa, northeastern Nebraska and southeastern South Dakota are often termed as Siouxland, particularly by the local media.

On July 19, 1989, United Airlines flight 232 crash landed at Sioux Gateway Airport, killing 111 individuals.
